Teaching the Origins of Nationalism
Discussion of how we can teach the global origins of nationalism
I’ve been reading Eric Storm’s recently published Nationalism: A World History, and it’s got me thinking about how I teach nationalism. I’m guessing it’s similar to many history teachers. I would mention something about Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities and then focus on the development of nationalism during the Atlantic Revolutions. African and Asian nationalism usually didn’t come up until teaching imperialism. Storm’s book has challenged me to rethink this approach.
